Rumi & The Fire of Radical Love:
A Path Through Global Rupture
A four-part course with Omid Safi
The Sufi path of Radical Love is one of the most powerful poetic and mystical currents in the spiritual history of humanity. It begins with a bold claim: There is One Love, and no division between the love of God and the love of humanity. This is a love that is at once sensual and spiritual, earthly and divine.
Its most famous voice is the incomparable Rumi, and this journey will introduce you to the salient features of his thought, his life story, and the powerful and very much living mystical tradition that gives birth to him.
But what does it mean to love in a world defined by war, division, and injustice? Rumi himself lived through the cataclysm of the Mongol invasions—a time of immense displacement and violence. From that crucible, he forged a perspective that was as much about the marketplace as it is about the sanctuary.
In this four-part workshop, we will bridge the gap between Rumi’s mystical poetry and the realities of our contemporary moment. We will explore how to move beyond passive spirituality to cultivate a “fierce compassion” that acknowledges the brokenness of our world and chooses, despite everything, to act with love. No background is necessary, and all the readings are in English.
